Do Attitudes Change Behavior?

Satisfaction and Absenteeism

While satisfaction and absenteeism are also negatively related, the association revealed by studies is not as strong as we might expect. However, satisfaction may play a larger role in determining absenteeism than such figures might indicate. This is because, much absenteeism is unavoidable, caused by such things as illness or emergencies. If the relationship of satisfaction to avoidable absenteeism be adequately assessed, it would probably be considerable.

Satisfaction and Performance

Findings concerning the relationship of satisfaction to performance show us why research is often needed to augment common sense. While it seems reasonable to expect that satisfied workers would he more productive, many studies suggest that this is really not the case, at least to any appreciable degree. Major reviews of the satisfaction-performance relationship have concluded that the correlations are so low as to be negligible, and that satisfaction does not imply motivation for strong performance.

The Financial Impact of Attitudes

The failure to find that satisfaction causes better performance, at least narrowly defined, should not lead us to conclude that attitudes don't influence financial performance. Instead, as we've tried to show, absenteeism, turnover, and other employee behaviors also have costs. The area of behavioral accounting is now trying to assess the financial impact of attitudes. It does this by examining the costs of such behaviors as turnover and absenteeism and the strength of their links to attitudes. While this is a new field, and fraught with measurement problems, some of its conclusions are remarkable.
